The Most Disturbing Story I've Read in Years
THE FIRST DRAWING GOES HARD :d
I just started the video but Sherlock Holmes does one thing that is bad smokes he just smokes a lot
So not to be a spoil sport, but I feel like I live with all kinds of unknown and even unknowable stuff... and none of that bothers me too much? Physics alone is full of mysteries that we can't yet fathom. At some point, you have to accept that the sun will rise even if you don't know what dark matter is. I admit I can be afraid of the unknown when it comes to potential hazards, like health issues or even just unopened mail. But I think I'm unusually comfortable with the unknown overall? Anyone else have this feeling? Given that fear of the unknown blossomed with Lovecraft, the timing suggests that nihilism may underpin it. I consider myself to be post-nihilist, comfortable with an unknowable cosmos and interested in the way that humanity, and all life, builds meaning without the universe needing to hand it to us. So maybe that's the root of it. For me, the unknown isn't a monster lurking outside my door, but rather a part of my atmosphere, like nitrogen, there in the air I breathe even when I don't pay attention to it. Sorry for the rambling thoughts. Just baffled by my own reaction :D
The thing is, swords were rarely ever used in actual combat. They took a long time to make and even longer to learn how to use properly. Swords were status symbols. If you saw someone with a sword, it meant they were rich enough to get one made for them and rich enough to have a tutor train them in using it. Ordinary soldiers fought with spears in front, archers in back. And I'd rather not be using a sword if my opponent has a spear. As weapons evolved, the spears became pikes and lances and the bows became crossbows and later firearms. At some point the spears and guns got smushed together into the musket/bayonet combo. Swords never got that kind of evolution because they were objectively the worst weapon to bring to a fight.
The first painting makes me feel panic cause the room is empty and so brightly lit that there are no shadows to hide in yet it doesn’t leak through the door. Not to mention the dog reacting to something in the next room.
I think the survey corp's fight with Eren is good addition to this video... It might go to the forced/reluctant category.
They remind me of my childhood home in the deep southern wilderness 😂 not spooky for me, unless you somehow add the sudden silence of crickets
A lot of magic by practice usually has a success rate limited to the individual practicing and what they are trying to achieve. Trying to shoot a lightning bolt out of your fingertips with nothing but words and finger waving? Not likely to happen ( I won't say impossible because for all I know, there's a planet ten million light years away where that's normal, idk, i live on earth. xD) But Gri-Gri? Confidence talismans, nordic runes instilled with various positive traits, ect Ect. Or rituals of self empowerment, ect. THOSE can work, and while science would attribute any success to more or less a placebo effect altering how you approach and perceive life thus mimicking such effects and appearing to the self as magic (Since without it they viewed these alternatives as either unachievable or unlikely) We really dont know do we? I mean, we cant prove that there is any inherent magical effect to any of that, but the results of those who really believe in it can often be quite shocking, and yes, belief is a huge part of a placebo effect, but if we arent believers thats really all we would see wouldn't we?
0:42 its ears are perked- * squints * "Its ears are not perked."
Does the potato know of fries?
On a note, certain Buddhist sects actually state that it’s possible to be reincarnated into the godly realm to become a god yourself as well.
here's something I wish was a thing: a creepy comfort game. one that looks creepy, but is meant to help or comfort you, like a therapist. as someone who is more comforted around creepy stuff, it would mean a lot.
I do want to give a quick PSA for anyone starting to read lovecraft. He was not a good person. He was incredibly racist, classist, and xenophobic. Even for the time, and this is absolutely something you need to be aware of when you read his work because he does not shy away from it, and in fact his writing will often take a backseat to his xenophobia. He was a great author but it is important to keep it in mind as you read
Fun fact about city from the intro, the reason it “doesnt make sense” is because its supposedly made up of non-Euclidian geometry. The thing about that is that since we live on a sphere all of our architecture is non-euclidian. Lovecraft wasn’t too keen on math.

ok but why did this make me cry
The ending of the Night Gallery pilot episode "The Cemetery" was the most chilling thing I've ever seen. The combination of the music FX, and that stygian black opened doorway, allowed your imagination to conjure up whatever YOU thought the scariest thing to appear in that door way might be, instead of a guy in a costume or makeup, spoiling the suspense. Check it out, and you too will feel that primal horror.
I don't think of Watership Down as having a magic system - the only magic is that they talk, and the author did explain that some of the language was actually in posture, scent, and ear movements. They are otherwise like any natural rabbit, if said rabbit was smart enough to have a culture. It's a bit of a stretch, but more of a parallel world concept than a magical world concept.
1:56 There is a non-zero chance that a cow can kill you.
Who else despises the bird on downpour’s art cover, they are literally what nightmares are made of
The Fae cannot lie or go back on a promise or bad things will happen to them. But they will always try to fool you with the truth, for they have no love of humanity. The Devil is often portrayed as a gentleman; however, he always cheats, and only tells the truth when it hurts you. You have to know what kind of entity you're dealing with, or you'll be watching for the wrong kind of trouble, and jump right into their trap!
It seems to me so many episodes were about death (Robert Redford) /denial of death (Bruce Willis in The Sixth Sense) or (Nicole Kidman in The Others.) Or trying to go back in time to a gentler period than the present.
They may not be villains but some anti-heroes do have villainous tendencies
I hope that someday you can enjoy fantasy magic systems more than you currently do. Good luck with your self-development, and thank you for your effort with the video. I enjoyed the concepts, perspective, and opinion put forth 🙂
Saying that if i reject the rules of the “contract” that i am born into makes me a monster is pretty monstrous
I very much love the first, original monster from Backrooms series, since it followed what backrooms were at that time: a one off, random, completely unexplained danger. There were no levels, only empty, endless, generated spaces that looked more or less correct but incorrect. Monster wasn't any different from floor with bottomless holes, black mold, or thing being a maze impossible to get out of. It was just something that seemingly was a danger, but in reality it was a mercy to those lost in them It was fine because it was one off. Unexplained, never again mentioned. We know it was there, it might probably still be there, but we won't know. And we won't know what else is there.
My perspective on the afterlife is that regardless of what it is, it has no bearing on me. I have no memory of what I was before I became what I am now, and for all intents and purposes, whatever it was had no tangible bearing on what I am. Based on the only experience I have in not being alive, I have no reason to believe that my experience upon no longer being alive again will be any different. Even if we reincarnate or experience an afterlife, from my reasoning, whatever that is wouldn't be us anymore. By extension, even if a part of us goes on, this is the only life that our egos really have.
We have figured out how to control earth and its many materials in such a way that it can process and transport information, move electricity from one point to another, launch them at one another at extremely high and dangerous speeds, level cities, create mechanical machines that do our bidding with the press of a pedal or button, and infinitely more applications we are still coming up with to this day. It's a marvel that we are doing this all with such ease and making such groundbreaking discoveries.
Hume handled causality in the 1600's. Causality isn't a thing in the world, it is an aspect of our explanations of the world. And the world has no obligation to stick to our explanations.
No matter the existence, human or fantastical being, they can get behind morality, in most adaptations, bare a few, outside they are the beings we know on, inside- *They are a sapient existence alike any other.* Just as much, they can disregard it, such sapience, in sacrifice to pure, fluxed, objective, desire, whatever the word of what fits.
This video reminds me of a "more profound than it first seems" phrases that I heard. "You aren't afraid of being alone in the dark. You are afraid of NOT being alone in the dark."
As scary as the picture is, I just wanna jump in and protect the dog.
The one with the cows is even creepier if we imagine it's on the third floor.
Am I the only person who doesnt give a fuck about the unknown? Not only from a creative stand point. As in, the writer is more creative for creating more stuff and not "leaving it up to the imagination" or w.e bullshit. But as someone who had bad things happen to them, when they actually happened, they were far worse than what I imagined/anticipated. I feel like fear of the unknown is for children or people with no life experience. Because knowing truly awful things feels way worse.
I think what Nostalgia Horror is at it's very core, the fear that your memories aren't as infallible and stable as you thought they were, the doubt of your own mind, the worry that maybe, by some sort of stretch and tear of the imagination, your very memory of something was False or Recorded Over, There's a reason that Stories from the course of the dawn of man, all the way to the internet age, there was a common theme in a lot of them, revisiting something old, then realizing it wasn't how you thought it was, Demons haunting an old episode of your former favorite show, Learning the old Library you used to visit never existed, A video game you used to play being haunted by something, Looking back at a childhood picture of yourself in the Local Park, and realizing you never even noticed the Tall Humanoid Figure in the background, just obscured enough by the lush camouflaging trees to where you won't see it, Rewatching a bunch of amateurish "movies" you and your friends made back in the day, only to notice weird things emerging from the rewatch, It's horror spawned from the realization that you don't actually... know.. the past.
This perfectly articulates what the internet took away from the backrooms once it became famous. Of course filling the endless hallways and rooms with cryptids and monsters will make things scarier and more "Interesting". But in doing so, it takes away the allure of the backrooms. It's like giving the monster a backstory, by doing so it removes all sense of mystery, instead of being afraid, you're more or less categorizing the entity, which makes it far less scary.
Looking at death from a mortal view. "Immortality is boring" is assuming that at one point, there's nothing left to experience. Having experienced altered states of consciousness, many times naturally and through dreams, I can tell you most of what you experience is through any certain state of mind. A heaven can exist in a gloomy swamp or a lava pit, and a hell can exist in an earthen paradise or a dystopia disguised as a utopia. We look at the universe through a myopic lens of our own personal experiences. Immortality is indeed boring if we're stuck in a limbo where we cannot progress, and existence has become meaningless. A sort of cosmic horror, especially if we're to be trapped in our basic human states forever. Nobody wants that.
A good example of a different interpretation: The Ancient language from Eragon. You can't lie in the Ancient language. Like, literally. Your word has tobbe true or you physically can't say it. This is why spells that take too much energy from you are dangerous in the books. Unless you phrase the spell to not be instantaneous and have a way to cancle it, it will kill you.
I know their not villians necessarily, but the redemptions for Arthur Morgan and John Marston are incredible. Becuase despite their good actions to help others, the cruelty toward others as part of gang lingears. Their actions have consequences. Arthur contacts TB after beating a poor farmer to get back a loan. John gets forced to hunt down his old gang members because of him killing Micah. And both die, passing their sins to others and leaving the wider world with a bitter taste for them. Yet they know they are still bad men. Despite the good they do, they are still bad men. But its the impact on their loved ones, which seal their redemption. Arthur sacrificing himself so John can be with his family, and john sacrifices himself for his family Both characters are amazing in writer and impact
The fourth wall acknowledges the story's status as fictional, and the fifth wall argues that the reader of the story is part of the fiction. That's a scary concept. The metaphor of the theater is a good one; watching people watch a story.
Thank you thank you thank you so much for mentioning Susanna Clarke.
